Hip exam needed: A thorough hip examination would allow for a diagnosis and treatment plan for your hip. The differential diagnosis is broad until examination findings are noted along with plain radiographic findings. Internal hip problems such as cartilage injury or labral injury. External hip joint problems could invovle the musculature of the rectus femoris (large central thigh muscle) as it starts at the hip.

Labral tear: At your age hip impingement is a possibility and if symptoms persist should be evaluated. Need thorough exam and xrays to start. If exam/x-rays suspicious for impingement/labral tearing MRI warranted to evaluate labrum, cartilage surfaces. Symptomatic impingement in young pts amendable to arthroscopic intervention/correction with generally good results.
