Hard to say: Difficult to guess the cause without more history and exam. Is the knee swollen? Any injury? Following is a link to information about diagnosis and treatment of knee problems. Hopefully it will suggest the cause in your case. If the pain is recent a trial of Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen(if no contraindications) may be helpful.
