They could be--: but also could be symptomatic of several other things. It's very encouraging that you realize there's a problem and want to get help. Most sociopaths think their behavior is perfectly acceptable and don't want to change. You should see a psychiatrist or mental health counselor to see what actually might be the cause and get treatment, which could be counseling or medication or a combination.

Unlikely!: Sociopaths have no conscience! You appear to have a good one. Being aware of aberrant behavior is the first step to changing bad habits. Keep up the good work. You'll one day be a respectable person if you stay self aware and seek to improve daily. Have you read "Chicken Soup for the Soul"? Best Wishes!

Compuslive: anything, inlcuding lying, is best helped w/professional mental health support. Congrats on your concern about this. That makes it unlikely that you are a sociopath. You need someone to be accountable to in order to break these distructive habits. Keep up the good work. Peace and good health.

Why?: Why do you do this? You apparently don't know why, and you suggest that you could be doing otherwise but that it is "compulsive." You should consult a therapist or a psychiatrist to discuss this. But beware the possibility of lying to them and not being truthful; and then consider why you might lie to them, too, as information to share with them.

These are APD Sx's: but they also fit with Borderline and Narcissistic types. You might read "The Sociopath Next Door," which is a pretty good lay book written by a psychologist specializing in Antisocial Personality Disorder. These Sx's also occur in addicts and the chronically immature. This is a job for a Clinical Psychologist to assess.

Not likely: I don't believe that a genuine psychopath would express such concern with their actions as you do. More likely, you suffer from relationship patterns that come from your experiences in harmful relationships, usually beginning in your family of origin. I would suggest that you meet with a psychotherapist to talk about your feelings & experiences when you find yourself lying and manipulating others.

Forget labels: The fact that you care that you might have some of these characteristics means that you do not have a deeply fixed sociopathic personality . You should consider getting involved in psychotherapy so you can examine all these issues.

Personality Disorder: I commend you for being honest about compulsive lying and manipulating people to get my ways. Being “scared to death I'm A sociopath” indicates that you want to improve yourself. You are not sociopath if you do not have reckless disregard for your other’s, safety, have remorse for your actions, do not get in physical fights or assault, do not get arrested, and follow the LAW. Have Therapy.

I would not even : try to diagnose a personality disorder online. Bottom line is that there are a number of other criteria that would need to be met to make this diagnosis. It is good that you are candid about your behavior. If you would like to change - recommend that you work with a good therapist. Take care.

Symptoms: If you are truly worried about your behavior it would be good to consult with a psychologist about making changes. Change is possible and you don't have to keep making the same mistakes.
