DoNotDecryTheStye: A stye (otherwise called a "hordeolum," (don't ask me why; check a dictionary from 1610) can do what you've described and much more. In any event they hurt and make you look like you have a big cold sore (or worse) on your eyelid (a real conversation starter, right?). Some go away with warm compresses. Those that don't respond to that need a doctor. What the doctor does depends on how bad it is.
