Dr. James Lin answered

Ask your urologist..: All what you experienced is expected in some patients and results from delayed, but expected in some, complications with scar formation leading to ureteral blockage & high pressure above it. Over time, renal pelvis becomes distended, renal tissue becomes thinning, the wall of renal pelvis & ureter becomes thicker. Oftentimes & to a degree, chronic recurrent UTI may play a role to such appearance.
