Not unusual: Think of your ribs as if they are a series of bucket handles, lift it some and it inflates the lung, and sticks out more. Most of the time the vertebrae are stacked straight, so both sides rise the same. If one or more vertebrae is rotated some, the handle juts out more on one side. Rotation in scoliosis is common and usually just a cosmetic issue.

No: The degree of scoliosis itself is not severe enough to need treatment in and of itself. The first thing that occurs in the development if scoliosis is a rotation of the spine which does cause a asymmetry of the rib cage known as a asymmetric trunk rotation.
