Not recommended: Tricylic antidepressants interact with Lexapro (escitalopram) to increase risk of side effects such as dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations. This combination also increases risk for symptoms of serotonin syndrome. See: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/serotonin-syndrome/basics/definition/CON-20028946

Possibly: Some can be taken, for example, for neuropathic pain, at low doses. Otherwise, if you have maximized your dose of Lexapro (escitalopram) (usually 20 mg.), and you have had only a partial effect, then your prescriber may choose to add in a tricyclic, starting at a low dose and increasing slowly.
