Omeprazole: 1st, check out http://www.drugs.com/omeprazole.html to find out what Omeprazole is used to treat. 2nd, find out why you've been taking prescription or over-the-counter version. 3rd, chat w/your FamilyDoc to determine whether it's in your best interest to continue (we're just now discovering risks associated w/taking PPIs for long time) or to stop. If latter, then discuss how to do so.

It's easy: To taper off omeprazole because there are no withdrawal effects when lowering the dose. If it was prescribed by your doctor, it is always best to notify him/her first. If you are on the 40mg dose just go to 20mg and if still doing fine after a couple weeks just discontinue.
