A member asked:

Can a male have trichomonsis for years? also, can a woman have a pap smear and have it come up negative for trich falsely i.e. must she be symptomatic

A male can: Be a reservoir for Trichomonas which is a protozoan parasite for years inside his urethral tract and not have a lot of signs of infection. Pap smears are not tests for Trichomonas though if there happen to be these things on the slide then the pathologist will report.

Yes: Both men and women can have Trichomoniasis for years. About 70% of infected people do not have any signs or symptoms. When it does cause symptoms, they can range from mild irritation to severe inflammation. Some people with symptoms get them within 5 to 28 days after being infected, but others do not develop symptoms until much later. Symptoms can come and go. Yes, paps can miss trichomonads.
