A member asked:

What is the real dangers of using aleve (naproxen) for back pain and what is the maximum length of time one can use it without having renal or cardiac problems?

Ulcers, kidney fail: Due to a variety of physical changes common with aging in the US, in this case the stomach & kidneys, Aleve (naproxen) & similar medicines (like ibuprofen, higher dose aspirin 325 mg or more & even Celebrex) are not recommended. Unfortunate, since oral non-anti inflammatory meds are usually less effective for arthritis & back pain. But risks of GI bleed & kidney failure outweigh the benefits for most.

Alleve: Real danger is missing the real cause of the pain , u should be evaluated if alleve fails to treat the pain beyond 4 to 6 weeks
