Tooth pain: Use an over the counter lidocaine based tooth cream and should help with the pain control. See a doctor quickly as a chipped tooth can lead to an abscess and infection from retained food particles.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) or NSAID OTC: However, avoid taking any tooth pain medication without consulting your dentist first. Give him/her a call.

Otc meds: Alternate ibuprofen and Tylenol (acetaminophen) if you have no issues with these meds. Avoid chewing on the involved side and see if your dentist office has options for emergencies if that doesn't help you manage until your appointment. Failing that, go to an emergency room if the pain can't be managed. If the pain isn't too bad, hang in there until you can be evaluated and have a plan of treatment.
