Good question.: dermatology is difficult to practice without seeing the patient. I don't know what your age or even gender is but I suspect these are areas that are not pigmenting properly. Epiduo is a mild steroid cream gentle enough for facial application. I suspect your dermatologist feels there may be an inflammatory cause for the patches. I would try it for 2 to 3 weeks and if no change get a second opinion.

Tinea versicolor: Depending on several factors your co-morbidities, your habitat temperate vs tropical, whether or not it itches , is it spreading,byou may have to r/o an infection normally found in tropical medicine known as times versicolor which may cause depigmentation . Talk to your primary care about a Woods lamp examination or other pertinent test.
