Growing up: I am going to assume that the dermatologist confirmed the diagnosis of acne. By age nine, many boys are have their bodies turn into those of men. The transition will be difficult for both of you. The doctor's visit for acne is only the first of many common, difficult life-changes for a new teen. I am glad you are there for him. Best wishes to you both.

Pre-puberty acne: The emergence of acne in 7-10 year old kids has been shown to reflect hormone activity of the adrenal glands. A hormone labeled dhea-s stimulates the sebum production in the oil glands of the skin. It has a greater effect on acne than that of estrogen or testosterone & some in puberty with low levels of dhea-s have minimal acne.

Good question: 9yr old males are usually not that far into puberty. Does he have other secondary sexual characteristics? Has his pediatrician evaluated him for growth issues? Is there family history of early onset of puberty? Seizures? Learnig problems? Many times pimples in this age are related to poor hygiene ratehr than puberty. Needs exam by pediatrician.
