A member asked:

Hi doctor. is there any risk of dementing process in cutaneus amyloidosis? the risk of having amyloud bodies in cns? im 49 with a 20 years hx of macular amyloidosis and now worried about dementia. thanks

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not necessarily: We are comparing apples and oranges. The deposition of amyloid in the central nervous system involves cholesterol transporting systems, and the soluble amyloid may well be far more toxic. Furthermore, the greater issue is the effect of neurofibrillary tangles on the neuron, which may or may not be a downstream effect. So, do not worry, your risk is likely similar to those with no amyloid hx.
