56 bpm: That number is OK before you start your gym work but will be much higher when you finish your training. It will take some time for the heart rate to slow down but that should not affect you.

Yes: The more you exercise and become fit, the lower your resting heart rate. The opposite is also true: the worse shape you are, the higher the resting heart rate. Keep it up with the exercise!!
