Possibly: Environmental factors which could cause irritation to your skin could potentially lead to acne. Irritation leading to increased skin reactivity, sebaceous gland hypertrophy or increased production of oils can ultimately cause an obstructed pore. Propionibacterium, a bacteria commonly found on skin can then precipitate acne. Acne can also be affected by other factors such as hormones and genetics.

See your PCP: No one is certain of the exact cause, but hormones and genetics play a big part. If the cystic acne does not respond to the standard therapies, your doctor often treats the condition with medications. See your PCP for consult.
