Re: a severely depressed person with constant suicidal ideation, a plan, and multiple means of high lethality, what does a "grave" prognosis mean?

Grave prognosis is..: It's an emphasis on the word "grave". A grave is the hole in the ground where we bury dead people. A grave prognosis means a person's condition makes it likely for him or her to die in the near future, regardless of what diseases are present. For example, terminal cancer has a grave prognosis. A baby fetus born at 23 weeks of pregnancy has a grave prognosis; as does a huge brain hemorrhage.

It means if you: don't do something quickly, you or your friend might end up in an early grave. No kidding. Go to an ER STAT. Suicidal ideation, with plan with depression with high lethality potential are four very worrisome prognosticators--about the worst four. Get help ASAP.

Get person to ER: This person needs to be seen in the ER asap and hospitalized for suicidal high risk. This person should not be left alone. All obvious means of self-harm (pills, alcohol, drugs, any weapons, sharp objects etc) should be removed and made inaccessible. Call 911 if necessary. This person as described meets criteria for involuntary psychiatric hospitalization.
