Talk with him: You are clearly being a good friend. Talk with him, and encourage him to contact his therapist about his depression and suicidal ideations. Is he also taking medications? If so, these may need adjusting. If not, he may need to be working with a psychiatrist also so that his needs are addressed on more levels. Help him avoid alcohol, etc. If concerned that he will imminently self-harm, call 911.

Urge him to get help: People diagnosed with bipolar disorder have a high risk of suicide. Please urge him to go to an er or contact his therapist if he or she is available. If he refuses, you can call 911 and have the police or a mental health assessment team evaluate him for an involuntary hold. In california, it would be a 5150, 3 day hold.
