Sometimes, leave it.: You can leave it in as long as the wire is not having a negative effect on the immediate healing of the wound. The wire should be removed if it presently, or in the future, negatively impacts the expected results of the immediate surgery. I would expect that the surgeon has explained the implications of just such consequences.
