? pleurisy: After a significant contusion, such as you experienced, inflammation persists for a long time as the tissues heal. This inflammation may involve the lining of the lung or even the heart and result in pleuritis or pericarditis. Pain with lying down is commonly seen in these conditions. Often it also hurts to take a deep breath. See your doctor...an x-ray may help as well as an ECG/echocardiogram.

Fracture?: You may have broken your ribs. You need to rest for at least 6 weeks. It may take up to a few months in order for the ribs to sufficiently heal in order to surf again. Followup with a doctor if the pain continues.
