See Below...: Your doctor listens for the rate and rhythm of the heart-beat. Abnormalities of the rate or rhythm of the baby's heart-beat can be an indication that further testing is needed. Its a bit morbid (which is why we don't talk about it) but we also want to make sure the baby is alive. On rare occasions it isn't and we need to know this. Best wishes!
