Whitlow?: Painful small blisters on the thumb suggest a condition called herpetic whitlow, a viral infection caused by a herpes virus. This condition should resolve by itself within two weeks but a doctor can confirm the diagnosis and, if caught early enough, provide treatment to shorten the course of the illness.
