EDNOS is an eating..: ...disorder that doesn't fit the exact criteria for either anorexia nervosa or bulimia, but it's just as serious a health threat. You're fortunate that it was diagnosed; a proper diagnosis is the first step in recovery. While the treatment is complicated & multi-faceted, your chances of recovery are good as long as you get the treatment you need. Please stick with it! Dr. Anne

It's labels: Using the old criteria, most people with eating disorder ailments did not fit nicely into disorders as defined by DSM-IV. By default most people with eating disorder problems were diagnosed 'not otherwise specified' (NOS). This was corrected in the DSM-5. far less 'NOS" with better definitions. Bottom line: call it what you will, but the treatments/options are ~ same and it's vital to get some

No, not worse: EDNOS simply means that your symptoms do not fully fit the established criterion for anorexia or bulemia. If your symptoms are effecting you physically or are even life threatening, your condition is very severe, no matter how it's classified. The symptom impact is what determines severity.

No one wants to hear: that they're ill, and I’m sure it didn’t feel very good. Your diagnosis of EDNOS depends upon a lot of factors- there are levels of severity and five different subtypes. Your illness isn’t a matter of severity over another; it’s important because it’s affecting you, and it’s something you need to be treated for. Please follow your provider’s treatment recommendations to get better. Good luck!

All Important: Eating Disorder NOS means that someone thinks you have difficulties with eating disorders, but they weren't ready to be more specific at this time. It' not necessarily better or worse. The key thing is to make sure you get help!
