A member asked:

Husband age 61 has psa of 5.8. his younger brother just diagnosed with prostate cancer and having surgery. is level 5.8 ok or need follow-up?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Need follow-up: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, a PSA level of 5.8 does need follow up. Please note that about 75% of the people your husband's age do not have prostate cancer even with elevated PSA.
