Good question: Mesenteric panniculitis is not well understood. It is a diagnosis made on a ct scan showing nonspecific inflammatory changes in the fatty tissue that makes up the mesentery of the intestines. There is no specific cause known and treatment is not indicated. Some think that it is sometimes associated with a cancer elsewhere, but by no means does it mean someone has cancer if seen on a ct.

Abd fat inflammation: Mesenteric panniculitis is an inflammatory reaction in the fat around the blood vessels supplying the small or large intestine. By definition, it is non malignant , but it can be serious if it blocks off blood vessels in the type that can cause severe scarring in the mesentery. Diagnosis may require an operation for a biopsy but the most effective treatment, if necessary, is steroids.
