Would what be bad?: Where is it red & swollen? Gout is not an infection but it could definitely cause red & swollen joint. But an abscess or pus pocket could definitely be red & swollen. It's not clear what you're asking about that might be bad for whatever it is your dad has. Rather than speculating further, encourage him to see his Family Doc for evaluation, diagnosis & treatment.
