Physical therapy: An ankle sprain is usually a tear of the ligaments supporting the ankle. When healing, they scar over either correctly or incorrectly depending on your level of activity during healing as well as luck. If the scarring has left your ligaments too tight or too loose, ankle physical therapy may be able to restore or improve ankle function. This should be supervised by a licensed physical therapist

Pain is Bad.: The fact that you still have ankle swelling and pain after a year is troubling. The swelling is a sign that the ankle is not stable. Your age usually does not contribute to long lasting edema unless something is amiss. To remove all doubt, have your foot examined by a foot and ankle specialist.
