Not necessarily: More than half of sore throats are caused by various viruses that would not benefit from antibiotic treatment, in fact , antibiotics could cause a significant drug rash it it is mono. An urgent care center or clinic can do a simple test for strep germs and treat if it is.Untreated strep can cause a variety of problems and easily passes to your contacts.
