My sister (28) has white patches on the back of her throat and soreness. tested negative for strep, what else could it be? the urgent care nurse said she's not contagious if she's not coughing or showing spreading symptoms, is that true?

A viral illness including Influenza is one possible cause of the findings. Soothing fluids are often effective in reducing the symptoms. Keep well hydrated and monitor temperature and breathing. Watch for signs of fever and rash.
