Where oh Where.: Your description makes a pretty good case for the possibility of a foreign body in the sole of your foot. It could have been there already and you stepping just moved it into a hurtful position. Having said that, you did not say exactly where in the foot the shooting pains are.

Where is pain?: Need more information. Could be as simple as plantar fasciitis or a nerve injury. Give more descriptive info: quality of pain (ie: sharp, burning, throbbing)
