Avoid the pain: If it is hurting like you stated then seek medical attention. This will likely include a radiography to verify that there is not a fracture. In the mean time you can wear a ankle brace, ice the area, massage with biofreeze etc and rest it. Easy range of motion often helps. If necessary get crutches and stay off of the area until you get in person medical attention.

Ankle sprain/strain : You really should see a foot and ankle specialist to evaluate whether you might have an ankle fracture, ankle sprain/strain or nerve entrapment syndrome (tarsal tunnel). An x-ray or mri/us will probably be used with a physical exam testing muscle strength with range of motion. A nerve test such as emg/ncv study might be ordered as well if symptoms warrant it.
