A member asked:

My wife's tsh level is 3.34 and ob/gyn wants to bring it down to less than 2.5 for planned pregnancy and she has prescribed synthroid (thyroxine) 50mg.is it safe?

Yes: Hi Lois, Yes, this is actually the current recommendation. The level of maternal thyroid hormone is important in early fetal development with some evidence suggesting impaired neurologic function if she were to get pregnant without sufficient hormone in her system. You can feel assured that this is safe and recommended. Dr. S.

YES: I am happy to hear your wife is seeing a progressive OB/GYN who understands the importance of thyroid in pregnancy. While many doctors consider a TSH of 3.34 normal, many specialists feel it should be below 3.0 or even 2.0. Low thyroid function reduces fertility and increases risk of miscarriage and other pregnancy complications. Synthroid (thyroxine) is identical to the T4 form of thyroid our bodies make.

Yes: And having hypothyroidism is not safe for her or the baby. Make sure TSH levels are normal before conception.
