Possible Ileus: For how long have these symptoms been going on? Has he had a bowel movement recently? If more than several days have gone thru without having a bowel movement or passing gas/flaturlence, then one must suspect an ileus which is basically a freezing of the bowels. If not addressed urgently, it could lead to perforation. Sometime after surgery many years back causes adhesions to form in the bowel
