IBS biopsy: In large part the reason irritible bowel syndrome is called a syndrome rather than a disease is because there are not consistent (or usually any) findings on biopsy of the bowel. Unwary or inexperienced pathologists may note "non-specific" inflammation, but these are most often within the spectrum of normal morphology.

No: ? whether IBS has associated tissue biopsy changes. Not usually, the peristaltic hypermotility of IBS is not organic, but is functional and likely caused by dysautonomia of the autonomic nervous system. Tissue biopsy changes are often seen with IBD, irritable bowel disorder, such as with Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis.
