High ankle sprains: can cause significant damaged to small blood vessels and ligaments in and around your ankle. Appropriate casting might be appropriate. Check with your local gp/orthopod as you may benefit from continued relative rest and may need imaging. good luck.

Ankle sprains: can be very painful and typically take around 6-8 weeks to heal. Make sure you are following all doctors orders for the most efficient healing and to get you back to activity as soon as possible!

Worse before better.: If your foot is swollen then there is a chance that the swelling is, in part, the reason for the pins and needles you are suffering from. It sounds like you did not have your ankle sprain treated early and that could be the reason for the problem now. It would be best to have your ankle evaluated to minimize the effects of the swelling and instability.
