Yes & protected:: Teeth should always be apart--especially when exerting stress while working out. You should protect your teeth with a properly fitted custom sport guard that will distribute the forces of impact every time you engage in sports with that potential (think: elbows and knees!) in addition, you should protect your teeth at night with a hard night guard as you lack protective reflexes while asleep.

Yes: Normally, the teeth are slightly apart at rest--while clenching teeth tightly is a natural stress reaction (e.g. When undergoing physical or mental stress). Typically dental restorations should work with your bite, but if you have concern for protecting a delicate restoration--you would want to have a custom made bite guard that would evenly distribute the pressure created by your bite.
