D-dimer: D-dimers are detectable as soon as clot forms & remains detectable during the acute fibrinolytic phase (clot breakdown phase). Although a D-dimer will only stay detectable for a matter of hours after released into the blood stream (D-dimer half life is 4-6 hours), the D-dimers are constantly released from the blood clot as the body lyses the clot. Therefore, D-dimer will elevate for about 7 days
