Snoring/sleep apnea: You might have the wrong type of night guard. There are some that are for TMD and some for snoring and sleep apnea. From your actions, it sounds as if you might need a snore guard or pillar Palatal procedure. I would see an oral surgeon or even possibly and ENT and get a sleep study to see if you have sleep apnea. This will determine what kind of treatment you should receive.

Sleep study: You might have sleep apnea. There are orofacial-TMJ dental specialists who also treat sleep apnea. Get a referral. These orofacial-TMJ docs will work with a medical sleep doc to solve your problem. You may need appliance therapy for your TMJ and sleep apnea.
