Hammer Time.: Hammer toes can certainly be painful at times and along with pain, they can be swollen. Hammer toes can be of flexible or rigid variety. Either way, when higher that normal pressure is being applied to the toe, it will react. The reaction is pain, swelling, redness and often callous formation. In extreme cases, the toe can ulcerate and start an infection process. Best to have it examined.
