There are hundreds of research studies documenting the positive mental and physical benefits of regular meditation. Meditation: If you are looking for assistance with stress or anxiety, it would be preferable to see a licensed therapist if you want to learn meditation. Some people with anxiety may find it more anxiety provoking to try to sit quietly, so working with a real therapist provides a measure of safety.

No.: It is either beneficial or neutral for most people. There are some mental disorders where it is difficult or impossible to sustain the mental focus of meditation; but it doesn't make one go insane.

To date, there are about 7500 hundred studies, on all types--mostly on TM (Transcendental Meditation), but also on Zazen and Mindfulness techniques (more in vogue now because of the popularity of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Benefits are decreased anxiety, increased mindfulness, etc. Only a few studies suggest that some people don't do better...
