Weight loss benefits: Weight loss is the benefit to diabetes. Many type 2 diabetics have Insulin resistance. So one unit of Insulin might cover only one gram of carbohydrate instead of 4 grams. The Insulin resistance improves with weight loss. The pancreas (makes insulin) can cover carbohydrate more efficiently and overall there is less carbohydrate needing coverage. Weight loss also benefits lipids and blood pressure.

Diabetes: Well, losing weight after surgery usually helps improve type 2 diabetes. In the case of the gastric bypass, it is the operation itself that helps correct diabetes with nearly a 90% rate of significant improvement or cure. By comparison, the sleeve has about a 60% cure rate, and the lap band about 40-50%. The gastric bypass is king when it comes to diabetes.

Fixes it.: Gastric bypass has actually been claimed to be curative of diabetes, even fixing it before substantial weight is even lost. And in the hands of an experienced surgeon there's minimal risk to the operation.
