Not surprising: Many times after surgery, diabetics have a lot harder time controlling their blood sugars. There is an increase in cortisol (a stress hormone) and other growth factors. In fact patients who are not diabetic before surgery may need Insulin for a few days after surgery because of elevated sugars. After a period of time they typically return to their baseline.
