A member asked:

I am curious if hypo active thyroid problems run in my family could i possibly have a hyperactive thyroid?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Autoimmune thyroid disease is complex. Patients with family history of thyroid diseases can make blocking or stimulating proteins against the TSH receptor, causing either low or high thyroid hormone levels. Additionally, the immune system may just attack the thyroid gland--- as a result, transient hyperthyroidism can occur , followed by hypothyroidism. Follow up is very important.
