Need complete workup: Many patients have clicking and deviation of the TMJ and do nothing about it. In order to be properly evaluated, have radiographs taken of the condyles in and open and closed position and follow through. A nightguard is one modality of treatment, but the etiology needs to be determined first.

Possibly: It's difficult to predict if years of wear and tear will ever worsen a specific situation. Common sense says that it will. See an oral surgeon for a complete workup.

Not likely: Jaw noises, popping or clicking alone, without pain or limited range of motion, do not indicate a TMJ disorder and do not warrant any TMJ treatment. If concerned, see Orofacial Pain specialist for consultation.
