Nerve issue: You are probably dealing with a lower back issue. Possibly a disk compression. Consult with your primary physician, an orthopedist or a chiropractor for an examination.

Sick nerve.: Since the pain begins on the outside of the ankle and then radiates from there, i would think that the problem is in the ankle area. An evaluation for a compressed or stretched nerve routing thru the area of the lateral ankle. Finding the trigger point might be the key.
