How long ?: How long after the placement of the implant ? A day, a week, a month ? If it is only a day, then you have inflammation from the surgery. If it is a month, then your body may be rejecting the implant. There's a reason for your swelling... have an oral surgeon examine you.

Not uncommon: Pain or swelling following implant surgery should subside more and more every day. If swelling, pain or any other problem gets worse beyond the seventh day after surgery, contact your oral surgeon.
