Total thyroidectomy: A surgeon doing a total thyroidectomy will always leave a small amount of tissue in order to avoid causing compications of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury or hypoparathyroidism. If thyroid cancer was found during surgery, one can get radioactive iodine to ablate the residual tissue. Finding a 6 mm nodule on ultrasound does not necessarily mean that there is recurrence of cancer.
