Persistent lump: Any mass that persists or grows larger over time deserves to be evaluated for potential cancer. Although most tumors in the scalp are simple benign cysts related to the hair structure, melanoma and other cancers can develop there as well. Melanoma is not usually familial, but your mother's experience should still be cautionary. Get it seen.
