The most important aspect in persistent asthma is using a controller drug (usually an inhaled steroid but can be a leukotriene blocker or long acting bronchodilator as additions). If you have frequent problem with asthma getting out of control, recommend that you see an allergist to find out what the triggers are.

Asthma: Absolutely, uncontrolled asthma can be life-threatening. The best ways to prevent severe exacerbations are: Follow your physician's directions on the use of all medications (inhaled steroids, rescue inhalers and adjunctive medications) and peak flow monitoring. Avoid triggers/ irritants - don't smoke etc. Educate yourself about your condition and work with your doc to optimize your care.
