Both essential: Both of these molecules are essential for life. Too much of either can be harmful. Best to get a full lipid profile checked if your worried for some reason, like a family history of problems related to dyslipidemia. You should start with a primary care provider. No hurry on this. You can lower your triglycerides and thereby your total cholesterol through a good diet and exercise regimen. Supplementing fish oil and Niacin can help as well.
